One of my greatest pleasures during summer mornings is a review of my garden. While carrying a cup of coffee, and wearing those funny rubber shoes, I walk around to see what new seeds have peeked through the earth during the night. A garden in Vermont gives short-lived joy as the season is slow to start and quick to end, so I have taken to photographing the results of Mother Nature's work.
In this show there are several large photographs, many featuring my amazing tree peonies, sometimes using a reflective method that will show a hint of the mountains, sky and shadows of the flower.
In addition, there are several smaller images that I collaged with a 'legend' to bring out the colors of each flower.
Actually, seeing and acknowledging 'Color' is a theme I have referred to in previous shows. Almost every decision we make can be affected by color. We may not even be aware of its power dictating the clothes we select, the food we eat and the tableware on which we serve that food. The rooms we sit in, the choices in fabrics, rugs and walls, etc. So much of it is unconscious that one might be surprised just how much our psychological selves are manipulated by color.
And, lastly, as I still think of myself, first and foremost as a painter, I have painted several abstract canvases on which I have collaged photographed flowers, printed on canvas. On each, I have once again asked the viewer to absorb the essence of color by extracting several shades and then capturing them in plastic boxes.
You will notice adhered plexi sheets over the actual blooms on some of the work. This is less as a form of protection and more as a metaphor for my belief that they are precious and should be revered.
